Amazon Shuts Down Development of Lord Of The Rings MMORPG

A Bloomberg article announced that Amazon is shutting down development for the Lord of the Rings MMORPG. This is another setback for Amazon Game Studios who have been struggling to develop a successful video game since its launch in 2014.

Amazon Game Studio was working alongside China-based Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, which Tencent Holdings Ltd recently purchased. According to people who are familiar with the matter but wished not to be named said that the negotiations led to conflict between the two companies, leading to the cancelation of the Lord of the Ring MMORPG.

These statements were confirmed by an Amazon spokesperson who said, “we have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time.”

Now, this statement doesn’t exactly mean that the Lord of the Rings title is put away forever. It does mean that we won’t be seeing it any time soon. Hopefully, a deal can be made sometime in the future, but for now, the only game from Amazon Game Studio that we can look forward to is New World.

Even though New World has had multiple setbacks already, it does look like it will be coming out on August 31, 2021. This game will be Amazon’s chance to prove that it can be a game studio that can compete with the best. If it fails, I have a feeling that it might be Amazon Game Studios’ last chance.

Luckily for Amazon, they still have Twitch. So even if developing video games might not be one of their strong points, they still can provide content for the gaming world.
