CD Projekt Red announced today that they were targeted in a Cyberattack. The hackers left a ransom note with details on what was taken from the companies internal systems. The ransom note read, “We have dumped FULL copies of the source code from your perforce server for Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Gwent, and the unreleased version of Witcher 3!!!” CD Projekt Red has already released a statement saying “the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our servers.” Though that is good news the hacker also stated “We have also Dumped all of your documents relating to accounting, administration, legal, HR, investor relations, and more!” This cyberattack is not good news for a company that is already under scrutiny for releasing what is said to be an unfinished game in Cyberpunk 2077.
CD Projekt Red was given a 48 hour window to make a deal with the hacker. They have no plans to negotiate with said hacker and are fully aware this might lead to the release of compromised information. With all this being said CD Projekt Red has taken the necessary steps in trying to stop such things from happening in the future. They have contacted authorities, “including law enforcement and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office, as well as IT forensic specialist.” They also noted “We have already secured our IT infrastructure and begun restoring the data.”
Cyberattacks aren’t that uncommon in the world of gaming but it is always a scare when a major company gets hacked. It makes you wonder if your information is safe from others and if you should do more to prevent it. Hopefully CD Projekt Red can recover from such an event and the information that was stolen won’t do too much damage to the company as a whole. We will keep updating this post with more details as we find out more.
